CHEN POSTS LOWEST ROUND FOR WOMEN'S GOLF AT CHIP-N INVITATIONAL

Justine Chen tied for 36th place to lead the Hornet women at the Chip-N Invitational.

LINCOLN, Neb. —
 Justine Chen led the Sacramento State women's golf team in the final round of the Chip-N Invitational on Tuesday at the Wilderness Ridge Golf Club. Chen shot 77 and finished the weather-shortened 36-hole tournament in a tie for 36th place.

The Hornets wrapped up the event in 14th place with a total of 633. Arkansas State rallied with a final round of 292 to win the team title with a total of 598. Kansas and Kansas State tied for second at 599 and were joined in the top five by first-round leader UTSA (604), Missouri (617) and Texas State (617).

In the second round, which started on Monday, Chen opened by parring eight of her first nine holes. From that point, she had just one more par along with two birdies and six bogeys.

Julie Shutler and Ellese Dias each carded a round of 79 to tie for the second best mark on the team. Shutler was 6-over through her first eight holes but then birdied the par-4 16th. She played her final nine holes at two over with seven pars and two bogeys. Dias stood at 7-over through her first nine holes but turned things around with two birdies, five pars and two bogeys.

Sacramento State also received a pair of 82s from Samantha Saffold and Kercia Brakel. Saffold began play on the seventh hole and was 6-over through nine holes. She later dropped 10-over through 14 holes but ended her round with a birdie and three pars. Brakel started with a triple-bogey on the par-5 ninth before playing her next nine holes at 3-over. Her final eight holes consisted of five pars, two bogeys and a double-bogey.

North Dakota State's Amy Anderson shot 71-73-144 to become the medalist. Anderson headed into the second round trailing by one stroke, but produced the second best score of the day. Kansas State's Paige Osterloo was second at 74-71-145.

Sacramento State will next compete at the Cougar Cup in Pullman, Wash., on Sept. 20-22.
