SHUTLER POSTS TEAM LOW IN FINAL ROUNDS OF FRESNO STATE LEXUS CLASSIC

FRESNO, Calif. — Sacramento State sophomore Julie Shutler recorded the second best 54-hole score of her career and the fourth best in school history at the Fresno State Lexus Classic. Shutler shot 72-73-74-219 and finished tied for sixth overall.
The Hornets recorded a round of 310 in Tuesday's final round and finished with a three-round total of 308-301-310-919 to place 10th. UC Davis maintained its first day lead to win the team title. The Aggies shot 288-294-298-880 and were two strokes ahead of San Jose State. The remainder of the top five consisted of Fresno State (898), Gonzaga (903), UC Irvine (905) and Santa Clara (905).
Shutler played her opening nine holes even par with a bogey on the par-4 fifth and a birdie on the par-4 ninth. On the back, she parred the first six holes before playing the last three at 2-over to end with a 74.
Sophomore Justine Chen was one stroke behind Shutler on Tuesday and tied for 33rd overall. Chen recovered from a slow start to the tournament to shoot 79-77-75-231. In her final round, she was 3-over on the front but even on the back, including a birdie on the par-4 18th.
Senior Brooke Green tied for 36th with rounds of 78-76-80-234. Green was steady during the last round with 10 pars and eight bogeys.
Junior Samantha Saffold was just 1-over through the first six holes on Tuesday but finished her round with an 81. Saffold concluded the tournament at 80-76-81-237 to tie for 54th. Senior Annie Becker placed 56th at 79-76-83-238.
Freshman Kercia Brakel, who was playing as an individual, recorded the second best finish among Hornet golfers, Brakel tied for 29th with a 54-hole total of 230. On Tuesday, Brakel shot 77-75-78.
San Jose State's Cristina Corpus was the medalist. Corpus opened the tournament with a round of 74 but played the final two rounds at 4-under to shoot 214. She finished three stokes ahead of three golfers who tied for second.
Sacramento State will next compete at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitatonal in Kane'ohe, O'ahu on March 15-16.
