WOMEN'S GOLF SETS TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL RECORDS AT CAL POLY

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. — The Sacramento State women's golf team set team and individual records at the Lamkin Grip/Cal Poly Invitational on Monday. Led by Julie Shutler and Samantha Saffold, the Hornets finished with the best 36-hole score in school history (603) as well as the best individual 36-hole mark (147).
As a team, Sacramento State shot 297 in the second round and finished fourth in the event. Cal State Northridge captured the team title with a total of 591. The Matadors were able to hold off Northern Arizona by one stroke and were 11 strokes better than third-place Xavier (602).
Sacramento State's final score of 306-297-603 was four strokes better than the previous 36-hole best of 607 which came at the 2006 Fresno State Invitational. Individually, Saffold and Shutler each had totals of 147 to break the previous record of 149 by two strokes.
On Monday, Shutler posted a career best of 69. That score ties her second all-time at Sacramento State and is just one stroke off the record of 68 set by Sarah Kuykendall in 2005. Coupled with her opening round of 78, she was able to better her career 36-hole best by nine strokes.
Saffold shot 71 on Sunday and added a round of 76. Her previous 36-hole low was 151 at the Cal Poly Invitational a year ago. The pair tied for fifth place in the field, five strokes behind CSN's Ashlee Nagamine (76-66-142).
Brooke Green finished tied for 19th at 78-74-152 while Justine Chen shot 79-78-157 to tie for 30th. Sacramento State also had Kercia Brakel and Annie Becker tie for 45th place. Brakel shot rounds of 80 and 81 while Becker carded scores of 83 and 78 while playing as an individual.
The tournament was the final fall event for Sacramento State. The team returns to action on March 1 at the Fresno State Invitational.
