WOMEN FINISH SEVENTH, MEN 10TH AT OREGON STATE TOURNAMENT

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Junior Brooke Green tied for 13th place overall to help lead the Sacramento State women’s golf team and freshmen Cameron Rappleye and Jake Johnson tied for 32nd to pace the men at the Giustina Memorial Classic on Tuesday.

Green shot 72-80-71-233 and finished two strokes ahead of freshman Justine Chen (74-81-80-235). Samantha Saffold tied for 34th at 80-80-83-243 and freshman Julie Shutler tied for 37th with rounds of 76-83-85-244. Fellow freshman Alyssa Pena rounded out the lineup at 83-87-83-253 to place 46th.

Host Oregon State rallied for the team title with a strong third round. The Beavers shot 303-298-303-904 to finish two strokes ahead of in-state rival Oregon. San Francisco (301-304-306-911), Fresno State (311-306-312-929) and Washington State (312-293-330-935) completed the top five. Oregon’s Kendra Little was the medalist by four strokes. Little jumped to the lead with a first-round 69 and added consecutive rounds of 73 for a three-round total of 215.

In the men’s tournament, Cameron Rappleye shot 70-74-76-220 and Johnson carded 72-73-75-220 in his first collegiate tournament. Grant Rappleye was 44th overall at 75-76-75-226 and Grant Norton was 45th at 75-76-78-229. Jeremy Harris placed 49th at 78-78-82-238.

Oregon State defeated Nevada in a playoff to claim the championship. Both teams shot 853. San Francisco (855), Washington State (859) and Oregon (860) finished second through fifth, respectively. OSU’s Diego Velazquez ended the 54-hole event 8-under to become the medalist. Velazquez shot 71-69-68-208 to finish two strokes ahead of USF’s Ji Hwan Park.

By virtue of winning both events, Oregon State won the combined team title as well with a total of 1,757. Sacramento State finished 10th overall.

The men’s team will return to action next week for the Hartford Invitational which will also serve as the America Sky Conference championship. The women will next play at the Hawkeye Intercollegiate beginning on Oct. 4.
