DENVER CRUISES TO TEAM TITLE, HORNETS TIE FOR 14th AT REGIONAL PREVIEW
4/1/2008
LINCOLN, Calif. — The University of Denver women’s golf team lived up to its billing as the top ranked team in the field and cruised to a team title at the NCAA West Regional Preview hosted by Sacramento State, Tuesday afternoon at the Lincoln Hills Golf Club. The Pioneers, who are ranked 12th nationally, maintained their first-day advantage and ended the three-round event at 288-290-298-876. Their score was just 12-over par and was 24 strokes better than second place Oregon (300-292-308-900).
Fresno State finished third (305-293-306-904) while UC Davis (300-299-306-905) and UNLV (301-296-308-905) tied for fourth. Sacramento State tied for 14th place overall with scores of 307-308-315-930.
Washington State’s Amy Eneroth hung on to become the medalist by one stroke. Eneroth dominated the course on Monday, shooting 71 and 68 but was tested on Tuesday en route to a 77. Her three-round score of 216 finished just ahead of Oregon’s Cathryn Bristow (75-70-72-217) and UC Davis’ Alice Kim (71-72-74-217), who was competing as an individual.
Sacramento State struggled to find consistency during the three rounds. No player on the team was able to post three rounds in the 70s and the scores ranged from a pair of 73s to an 85. On Tuesday, Heather LeMaster and Brooke Green each led the Hornets with a 77. LeMaster had the top tournament score on the team at 73-81-77-231 which tied for 37th overall. Kim Coppin, who had the low score on the team after the first two rounds, shot 80-73-81-234 to tie for 54th place. Her total was matched by freshman Samantha Saffold (73-81-80). Erica Yoshino (T66, 81-75-81-237) and Green (T79, 85-79-77-241) rounded out the lineup.
Sacramento State will next compete at the NAU Preview on March 10. The team will then head to the Big Sky Conference Championship and look to defend its title beginning on April 21. The winner of the Big Sky Championship will be awarded an automatic berth into the NCAA Championship. The Hornets are one of three schools hosting a regional for the NCAA Championships. The West Regional will be held at Lincoln Hills Golf Club, May 8-10.
