SAFFOLD LEADS WOMEN'S GOLF AT UNLV SPRING REBEL INVITATIONAL

3/12/2008

LAS VEGAS — Freshman Samantha Saffold shot a 2-over 74 in the third and final round of the UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational and finished tied for 35th place to lead Sacramento State. Saffold concluded the tournament with a total of 222 and had rounds of 77, 71, and 74.

Washington State and Brigham Young tied for the top team score after each team posted a total of 859. However, WSU was given the title based on the tournament tie-breaker. Oregon (869), Texas Tech (870) and San Francisco (870) completed the top five. The Hornets finished in 14th place with a total of 902.

Individually, Oregon’s Cathryn Bristow shot 8-under over the three rounds to become the medalist by two strokes. Bristow carded 69-69-70.

Saffold was the most consistent performer for Sacramento State at the event. The freshman opened with a 77 on Monday and then proceeded to shoot a 1-under 71 on Tuesday before closing out with a 74 on Wednesday. Her second round score was four strokes better than her closest teammate while her final round tied Brooke Green for the team’s best mark.

On Wednesday, Saffold began her round on the 10th hole and opened with three straight pars before birdying the par-5 13th. She moved back to even with a bogey on the next hole before five straight pars left her even at the turn. Her final nine holes proved to a little tougher as she bogeyed the first hole, pared the second and then bogeyed the third before playing the next five holes at 1-under. A bogey on nine left her 2-over for the round.

Sophomore Brooke Green matched Saffold’s 74 on Wednesday. Green pared her first six holes, bogeyed the 16th and then pared the final two. A bogey on the 1st hole took her to 2-over and she eventually bogeyed the 8th to raise to 3-over for the round. However, Green closed with a birdie on the par-5 ninth for her second best round of the day, She concluded the tournament at 78-75-74-227 to tie for 54th place.

Heather LeMaster also finished tied for 54th with rounds of 73, 78, and 76. Kim Coppin tied for 85th at 75-77-86-238 and Emily Longcrier was 88th at 74-87-78-239.

The Hornets will next compete at their own Sacramento State Invitational. The two-round event will take place at Lincoln Hills Golf Club on March 31 and April 1. Lincoln Hills will also serve as host of the NCAA West Regional later this spring.
