WOMEN'S GOLF WRAPS UP NCAA WEST REGIONAL WITH ITS BEST ROUND

ST. GEORGE, Utah — Senior Jennifer Parkes closed out her collegiate career by leading the Sacramento State women’s golf team in the final round of the NCAA West Regional at Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club on Saturday. Parkes shot 77 and the team combined for 316. That effort lifted the Hornets three spots to16th place out of 21 teams. Sacramento State, which was making its first regional appearance in school history, was seeded 20th prior to the event.
Oklahoma State and Stanford tied for first with a 54-hole total of 874. Those teams were followed by top-seeded Arizona State, Denver, BYU, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, and New Mexico in the top eighth. Those school will advance to the NCAA Championships later this month in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Pernilla Lindberg of Oklahoma State maintained her lead and finished as the medalist after shooting 68-68-70-206. She finished seven strokes ahead of Arizona State Anna Nordqvist, who was second at 72-74-67-213. Long Beach State’s Kay Hoey and Idaho’s Kelly Nakashima earned the two individual berths to the NCAA Championships. Hoey shot 77-73-70-220 while Nakashima recorded scores of 74-73-75-222.
Junior Heather LeMaster finished tied for 63rd to lead Sacramento State. After shooting 78 and 76 during the first two rounds, LeMaster closed with an 82 and a 54-hole total of 236. On Saturday, LeMaster played the first four holes at 1-under, including a birdie on the par-4 third. However, a double bogey on six, two pars and two bogeys left her at 3-over at the turn. On the back side, LeMaster carded four pars, a bogey, two doubles and triple to leave her at 11-over for the round.
Junior Emily Longcrier placed 69th overall after shooting 75-84-79-238. After a rough front nine, which saw her post five bogeys and one double bogey, Longcrier opened the back nine with six straight pars. She snapped that streak with a bogey on the difficult 16th but ended the round with two more pars for a 1-over 37 on the final nine holes.
Parkes bettered her best round of the tournament with a 77 on Saturday to tie for 74th. The senior was consistent throughout the round with 12 pars and six bogeys. She parred the first six holes on the back nine before bogeying 16. Following a par of 17 she bogeyed 18 for the first time during the three rounds. Parkes ended the tournament playing her final 27 holes at 9-over.
Margaux Sheehan also concluded her collegiate career at the regional. The reigning Big Sky champion, finished the event in 82nd place with rounds of 84-77-82-243. Sheehan opened her round with two pars but then double bogeyed the third and bogeyed the next five holes. Four pars (9th-12th) put her at 7-over before a stretch of bogey-double bogey -bogey. Sheehan then recorded a rare birdie on the par-5 16th, parred 17 and bogeyed 18.
Kim Coppin recorded the second best round on the team on Saturday with a 78. Coppin improved her score each round and finished with 89-83-78-250 to place 94th. On Saturday, Coppin birdied the 2nd and 6th hole but also tripled the 4th and bogeyed the 7th and 9th to sit at 3-over at the turn. The back side began with three pars, a bogey, and two more pars before she doubled 16. The junior then parred 17 and bogeyed 18.
The event was the final tournament for the 2006-07 season for the Hornets. The year was the best in school history as Sacramento State also claimed its first Big Sky Conference title and nearly rewrote the school record book.
Sacramento State will serve as host of the 2008 NCAA West Regional at Lincoln Hills Golf Club.
