SHUTLER FINISHES SEVENTH, WOMEN'S GOLF TIES FOR SEVENTH AT WSU COUGAR CUP

PULLMAN, Wash. — Senior Julie Shutler finished in seventh place and recorded the ninth-best 54-hole total in school history to help Sacramento State tie for seventh at the WSU Cougar Cup on Tuesday at Palouse Ridge Golf Club.
Shutler, who was tied for eighth after the first two rounds, ended the tournament with an even-par round of 72 and finished at 76-72-72-224. That total is the second-best of her collegiate career.
On Tuesday, Shutler began her round on the seventh hole and was 1-over through her first four holes. She then moved into the red with a birdies on the par-3 11th and par-4 12th. A bogey on 13 dropped her back to even and she eventually was 2-over after a double bogey on the par-4 15th. From that point, Shutler birdied the par-4 3rd and the par-5 5th and also had seven pars to end her round.
Freshman Lexie Hall shot 74 for the second-best round on the team. Hall ended the tournament tied for 38th with a 54-hole total of 235. In the third round, Hall was 3-under through her first six holes with birdies on seven, nine and 11. A pair of pars and bogeys were followed by a birdie on the par-5 18th to move her back to 1-under. Hall then doubled the par-4 1st and also bogeyed two of her final five holes.
Sagee Palavivatana and Kercia Brakel also contributed to the team score on Tuesday. Palavivatana shot 77 with two birdies, 11 pars, three bogeys and two double bogeys. Brakel carded an 80 consisting of a birdie, 10 pars, six bogeys and a triple bogey.
Overall, Brakel tied for 55th, freshman Samantha Stockton (84-78-81) tied for 57th and Palavivatana was 81st.
In the team standings, the Hornets' total of 323-314-303-940 tied the team with Nevada for seventh place. Washington maintained its first day lead and finished with a total of 890. Stanford (902), Idaho (910), Washington (911) and Oregon State (917) completed a Pac-12 dominated top five. Sacramento State had the best team score among the Big Sky Conference schools in the field, bettering Montana (10th), Montana State (11th), Portland State (12th) and Eastern Washington (13th).
Stanford's Sally Watson was the medalist after shooting 79-71-79-220. SooBin Kim of Washington was second at 76-70-75-221.
Sacramento State will next compete at the Nevada Invitational beginning on Oct. 3.
