SAFFOLD AND SHUTLER TIED FOR TEAM LEAD AT WYOMING COWGIRL CLASSIC

  CHANDLER, Ariz. — The Sacramento State women's golf team headed to the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic looking to see how the team measures up against the rest of the Big Sky Conference. After the first 36 holes of the event at the Ocotillo Golf Resort, the Hornets are right in the middle of the pack.
Sacramento State shot 309-320-629 on Monday and is in 15th place heading into the final round. Big Sky rival Portland State has a 17-stroke lead ahead of New Mexico State to lead the way. The Vikings shot 294-287-581. Among the nine Big Sky teams, the Hornets are fifth.
Individually, Samantha Saffold and Julie Shutler are tied for 19th. Saffold led the team in the morning round with a 1-over 73 and then posted a 78 in the second round. Shutler opened with a 77 but paced the team in the afternoon with a 74.
During the opening round, Saffold had a birdie on the par-5 11th, parred 16 holes and had a pair of bogey to reach her total. Shutler's low round consisted of three birdies, 12 pars, two bogeys and a tripe bogey.
Ellese Dias is tied for 50th and had the third-best score on the team in both rounds, shooting 78-80-155. THe team also counted rounds of 81 and 88 from Kirsten Watson who is tied for 104th.
Portland State's Britney Yada is the individual leader through 36 holes. Yada shot 71-70-141 and stands at 3-under. New Mexico State's Suteera Chanachai and Portland State's Kalyn Dodge sit two strokes back in a tie for second.
