SAFFOLD BUILDS FOUR-STROKE LEAD, DIAS SECOND AT CAL POLY CHALLENGE

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. — Samantha Saffold and Ellese Dias recorded the two best scores of the opening round and helped lead Sacramento State to the team lead at the Lamkin Grip/Cal Poly Challenge on Monday.
Saffold continued her hot play, shooting an 1-under 72 for the second time in her last three rounds. The senior leads Dias by four strokes. A trio of golfers are tied for third at 77.
With two golfers at the top of the standings, Sacramento State built a 7-stoke lead in the team standings. The Hornets shot 308 as a team while Seattle is second at 315. Cal Poly (319) and Big Sky rival Montana (319) are also within striking distance.
Helping the Hornets' score was junior Julie Shutler who shot 79 and is tied for eighth. The team also counted an 81 from sophomore Kercia Brakel which tied for 16th.
The Lamkin Grip/Cal Poly Challenge was originally scheduled for match play but was switched to stroke play to avoid wet weather predicted for Friday on the central coast. The tournament concludes on Friday morning at Cypress Ridge Golf Club.
