SAFFOLD SHOOTS 72 TO LEAD WOMEN'S GOLF IN OPENING ROUND OF FOLINO INVITATIONAL

Samantha Saffold set her season best with a 72 on Monday.
IRVINE, Calif. — Senior Samantha Saffold shot an even-par 72 and is tied for second place after the first round of the Folino Invitational at the Oak Creek Golf Club. Sacramento State is in seventh place as a team after totaling 329. The 36-hole tournament concludes on Tuesday.
On Monday, Saffold opened by bogeying her first three holes (16-18). From that point, the senior birdied two of her next four holes and eventually moved back to even with a birdie on the par-4 sixth. Four consecutive pars were followed by a birdie on the par-4 11th which dropped Saffold to 1-under through 14 holes. That score held until her final hole where Saffold bogeyed the par-5 15th to finish at 1-over.
The score, which is the lowest of the season by Saffold, places her two shots off the lead of Portland State's Lauren Taylor.
As a team, Saffold was the lone Hornet to break 80 in the opening round. Junior Julie Shutler ranked second on the team and is tied for for 21st overall after shooting 81. Shutler was even through her first four holes but then bogeyed three over her next five. Three straight pars put her back on track before being derailed by a double bogey on the par-4 11th and a quadruple bogey on the par-3 12th. The Manteca, Calif., native bounced back to par her final five holes.
Kercia Brakel shot 87 and is alone in 39th place. Brakel's round consisted of seven pars, seven bogeys and four double bogeys.
The final counting score came from freshman Ellese Dias who carded a round of 89 and is tied for 41st. Dias had six pars, five bogeys and six double bogeys.
Portland State has a three-shot lead in the team standings with a total of 303. The Vikings are followed by Long Beach State (306) and UC Irvine (310) in the top three.
