CHEN SHOOTS SEASON-BEST 75 IN THIRD ROUND OF GOLFWEEK CONFERENCE CHALLENGE

9/28/2010

VAIL, Colo. — The Sacramento State women's golf team concluded play at the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Wednesday with a round of 319. The Hornets finished 17th in the 18 team field with a total of 963.

During the final round, Justine Chen led Sacramento State with a round of 75. Chen moved into a tie for 55th place and finished with a total of 81-81-75-237. Her final round score was the best by a Hornet golfer this season. Chen began her round on the 16th hole and was 2-under through her first six holes with birdies on 17, 18, 2 and 3. Back-to-back bogeys moved her to even and she eventually stood at 4-over after 16 holes. Chen ended her round with a par of 14 and birdied the par-5 15th.

Samantha Saffold carded a 77 for the second best round of the day by a Hornet. The senior got off to a great start, birdying the par-5 18th to start her day. She played the remaining 17 holes with nine pars and eight bogeys.

Julie Shutler shot 81-77-82-240 to tie for 61st overall. Shutler endured a little of everything during her final round with three birdies, five pars, seven bogeys, and three double-bogeys.

The final counting score on Wednesday belonged to Kercia Brakel. The sophomore shot 83 and finished at 80-84-83-247. On Wednesday, Brakel had three birdies and eight pars but also recorded three bogeys, a double-bogey and two quadruple-bogeys.
