VAIL, Colo. — Sophomore Kercia Brakel led the Sacramento State women's golf team in the first round of Golfweek's Conference Challenge on Sunday at the Red Sky Golf Club. The 54-hole tournament will continue with the second round on Monday.
Brakel shot an 8-over par round of 80 and is tied for 63rd overall. Brakel — like the rest of the team — opened the tournament on the 10th hole and bogeyed her first two holes. She responded with a birdie on the par-4 12th and three consecutive pars. A double-bogey on the par-4 16th were followed by two more pars which left her at 3-over at the turn. Brakel's final nine holes were comprised of five pars, three bogeys and a double-bogey.
Justine Chen and Julie Shutler are tied for 67th after shooting 81. Chen was 5-over through her first six holes. From that point, she parred five of her next six holes with her only miscue being a double-bogey on the par-4 first. Birdies on the par-5 fourth and the par-4 sixth allowed her to shoot 39 on the front nine.
Shutler led the team after nine holes with a 2-over 38. The junior was 4-over after seven holes but birdied the par-3 17th and the par-5 18th. However, she closed her round with three pars, five bogeys and a double-bogey.
Samantha Saffold was one stroke back of the pair and is tied for 81st. Saffold shot 42 on her first nine holes and 41 on the back. During the round, she had 10 pars, six bogeys, a double-bogey and a triple-bogey.
