SAFFOLD MOVES TO SEVENTH PLACE AFTER SECOND ROUND OF COUGAR CUP

PULLMAN, Wash. — For the second consecutive day, Samantha Saffold led the Hornet women's golf team at the WSU Cougar Cup. Saffold shot a 3-over 75 and is tied for 10th place following the second round on Tuesday. The tournament concludes with the third round on Wednesday.

Saffold was the lone Sacramento State player to break 80 in the day as the team fell from fifth to eighth place. The Hornets totaled 320 for the second-consecutive round and are now 26 strokes behind host Washington State.

On Tuesday, Saffold was even through her first 11 holes with a combination of two birdies, seven pars and two bogeys. After a bogey on the first hole, she then birdied the par-4 second and the par-3 fourth to drop to 1-under. A bogey on the par-5 fifth moved her back to even where she remained until a double-bogey on the par-4 12th. The Sacramento native then alternated pars and bogeys for the next five holes before closing with a birdie on the par-5 18th.

Julie Shutler ranked second on the team with a round of 80 and is tied for 37th. Shutler was 1-over after five holes after parring the opening two holes, bogeying the third and fourth and birdying the par-5 fifth. Two pars, a bogey and another par left her at 2-over at the turn. On the back, Shutler shot 42 with four pars, four bogeys and a double-bogey.

Justine Chen was one stroke behind Shutler and is tied for 33rd overall at 79-82-161. Chen opened her second round with back-to-back bogeys before recording pars on the next two holes. A bogey on the fifth was followed by three straight pars to leave her at 3-over through eight. Double-bogeys on the par-5 ninth  and the par-3 11th quickly jumped her to 7-over. She ended her round with four pars and three bogeys.

Sophomore Kercia Brakel shot 83 and is tied for 49th place with a 36-hole total of 81-83-164. Brakel was 4-over through nine holes with five pars and four bogeys. On the back nine, she opened with three consecutive bogeys and a double-bogey on the par-3 13th before parring her next two holes. Brakel closed her round with a a pair of bogeys and a par on 18.

Hayley Holloway rounded out the Sacramento State lineup with a round of 86. Holloway shot 46 on the front and 40 on the back. Her round was comprised of eight pars, eight bogeys, a double-bogey and a quadruple-bogey.

Gonzaga's Victoria Fallgren maintained the individual lead with a 1-under 71. Fallgren stands at 74-71-145 and has a three-stroke lead over Idaho's Teo Poplawski.
