GREEN, SHUTLER AND BRAKEL SHARE TEAM LEAD AFTER FIRST DAY OF ANTEATER INVITATIONAL

3/29/2010

DOVE CANYON, Calif. — Playing its fourth and fifth rounds in the last four days, the Sacramento State women's golf team struggled to find consistency in the first day of the Anteater Invitational on Monday at the Dove Canyon Country Club.

The Hornets are in 14th place heading into Tuesday's final round with a two-round total of 325-316-641. San Diego State owns a total of 599 and is six strokes better than San Francisco and Kentucky, who are tied for second. Long Beach State (618) and UC Irvine (619) round out the top five.

Brooke Green, Julie Shutler and Kercia Brakel each shot 159 and are tied for 37th place to lead the Hornets. Green led the team in the morning round with an 9-over 80 and added a 79 in the afternoon. Shutler shot 83-76 and Brakel recorded rounds of 81 and 78.

Green was 3-over at the turn during her morning round but was 6-over on her final nine holes. In that stretch, she had one birdie, five bogeys and a double-bogey in holes 1-7 before ending with a pair of pars. The senior bounced back in the afternoon with a round that featured 10 pars and eight bogeys.

Shutler scrambled for most of her first round after a quadruple-bogey 9 on her opening hole (11th). She then followed with a bogey and later double-bogeyed the par-3 17th and bogeyed the 18th leaving her at 8-over through nine holes. From that point, she recorded a pair of birdies and two pars but also had four bogeys and a double-bogey.

In the second round, Shutler was 3-over in her first nine holes and 2-over in her next nine, ending the round with three birdies.

Brakel opened on the 12th hole and carded two straight pars before playing the next six holes at 5-over. After turning back to the 1st hole, she rebounded with three pars and a birdie in the first four. However, she closed with three pars, four bogeys and a double. The freshman got back on track in the late round and was 1-under through her first eight holes with a birdie of the par-3 13th. A double-bogey on the par-4 2nd snapped that streak and was one of four doubles in her final 10 holes.

The team also counted a pair of rounds from Annie Becker. The senior shot 81-83-164 and is tied for 59th. Justine Chen completed the lineup at 86-86-172 and is tied for 74th.

Hillary Packard of UC Irvine and Chrisitne Wong of San Diego State share the lead with a 36-hole total of 143.
