WOMEN'S GOLF STARTS STRONG, STRUGGLES LATE IN FIRST DAY OF MOUNTAIN VIEW

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Sacramento State women's golf team endured the good and the bad during the opening day of the Mountain View Collegiate on Monday.
Led by Julie Shutler's first-round leading 2-under 70, the Hornets were in fifth place heading into the second round with a total of 299. However, the second round was not as kind as Sacramento State shot 322 and enters the final round in 17th place with a 36-hole total of 621.
Individually, Shutler is tied for seventh place at 70-78-148. Freshman Kercia Brakel is tied for 60th with rounds of 75-81-156 and Brooke Green is tied for 70th at 78-80-158. Annie Becker is two strokes back of Green and is tied for 76th with a first-day total of 76-84-160. Samantha Saffold completes the lineup with rounds of 82 and 83 and is 90th.
Texas Tech leads the team standings by one stroke over BYU. The Red Raiders shot 296-299-595 while the Cougars recorded 291-305-596. UNLV and Colorado State are tied for third at 597.
Kelsey Vines of BYU, Kristen Schelling of UNLV, Kellye Blecher of Indiana and Julia Potter of Missouri share the individual lead with a total of 146.
The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Saturday.
