FRESNO, Calif. — Sacramento State sophomore Julie Shutler shot rounds of 72 and 73 and sits 1-over in a tie for sixth place following the first day of the Fresno State Lexus Classic on Monday at the Copper River Golf Club.

Shutler opened the spring season with an even-par 72 in the morning round and was just 1-over in the afternoon. She opened play on the sixth hole with three pars and two birdies on the first five holes. However, three straight bogeys on the 11th, 12th and 13th moved her to 1-over. Shutler answered with six consecutive pars and a birdie on the par-3 second to drop back to even. Her final three holes consisted on a bogey on the par-5 sixth, a birdie on the par-4 third and a par.
In the second round, she recorded three pars before moving to 1-under with a birdie on the par-4 ninth. A streak of six straight pars were halted with a double-bogey on the par-4 16th. Three more pars were followed by another birdie to make her 2-over with three holes to play. Shutler immediately birdied the par-5 third and then parred the final two holes to close the day.
Freshman Kercia Brakel ranked second on the team and is tied for 24th overall after shooting 77-75-152. However, Brakel is competing as an individual in the tournament and did not count toward the team score.
