SAFFOLD TIED FOR FIRST FOLLOWING FIRST ROUND OF CAL POLY INVITATIONAL

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. — Sacramento State's Samantha Saffold shot a 1-under 71 and is tied for the lead after the first round of the Lamkin Grip/Cal Poly Invitational on Sunday.
As a team, the Hornets are in fourth place with a score of 306. Xavier holds the lead at the midway point of the 36-hole event at 297. The Muskateers are followed by Cal State Northridge (298) and Northern Arizona (300). Host Cal Poly completes the top five with a team score of 308.
Saffold's round ties her with Xavier's Breanna Patz. The pair were the only two golfers to break par during the round which was played at the Cypress Ridge Golf Club.
Saffold was even on the front nine with a 36 then played the back at 1-under. She was followed on the team by Brooke Green and Julie Shutler who each shot 78 and are tied for 26th place. Justine Chen recorded a 79 and is tied for 31st while Kercia Brakel carded a round of 80 to tie for 40th.
This week's event pits the Hornets against five other Big Sky Conference schools. Sacramento State ranks second among those institutions trailing only NAU by six strokes. Weber State is seventh at 310 and is followed by Eastern Washington (329, T12), Montana State (334, T15) and Idaho State (346, T16).
The tournament will conclude on Monday with another 18-hole round.
