4/14/2009

OGDEN, Utah — Sacramento State's Brooke GreenJustine Chen and Samantha Saffold were each named to the all-Big Sky Conference women's golf team, it was announced today. Green and Chen were part of the five person first team while Saffold earned second team honors. Chen also became the first player in school history to be named Big Sky Freshman of the Year.

The Big Sky bases its all-conference selections on ratings provided by Golfstat. The top five players in the league are named to the first team while the sixth through 10th players in the rankings are named to the second team.

Green leads the team with an average of 77.64 in nine tournaments this season. The junior most recently tied for fifth at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic after shooting 70-80-76-226. She has two top 10 finishes this year and has placed in the top 20 in six of the nine events.

Chen is averaging 77.64 which ranks second on the team. The Lake Forest, Calif., native has been one of the most consistent players for Sacramento State as 15 of her last 16 rounds have been in the 70s. Her top finish came at the Sacramento State Invitational where she placed third after rounds of 76-78-254. She also added a fifth-place finish at the Northwest Dodge Inland Cup in September.

Saffold has also played every round this season for the Hornets and is averaging 78.64. The Sacramento native tied for fourth at the Sacramento State Invitational and added a 10th place finish at the Cal Poly Invitational during the year.

Sacramento State's three selections were tied with Northern Arizona for the most by any school in the nine-member Big Sky Conference. The Hornets were the only school to have two first team honorees. Montana State's Kelly Gillum was named the Big Sky Golfer of the Year.

Sacramento State will next play at the Big Sky Championships on April 20-22 at the Ocotillo Golf Resort in Chandler, Ariz. The winner of the tournament will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships.
