WOMEN'S GOLF PLACES THIRD AT COWGIRL CLASSIC

CHANDLER, Ariz. — The Sacramento State women’s golf team finished third at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on Tuesday at the Ocatillo Golf Resort. The Hornets shot 309 during the final round and finished with a three-day total of 930.
Sacramento State was led on Tuesday by senior Brooke Green and freshman Julie Shutler who each shot 76. Green placed fifth overall in the field with a total of 70-80-76-226. The Hornets also counted a 78 from sophomore Samantha Saffold and a 79 from freshman Justine Chen.
Northern Arizona edged Fresno State (909-908) to win the team title. The Lumberjacks took advantage of a second place finish by Bethany Lecalir and a third place showing from Ali Carter to hand the Hornets their first loss against a Big Sky school this season.
Montana State’s Kelly Gillum and Leclair each had a 54-hole total of 222 at the end of Tuesday. Gillum was declared the medalist on a scorecard tie-breaker.
Chen followed Green for Sacramento State and placed 16th overall at 77-76-79-232. Saffold tied for 27th at 83-75-78-236 and had the lowest total over the final two rounds for any Hornet golfer. Shutler moved into a tie for 35th at 80-82-76-238 while freshman Sasha Cruz tied for 69th at 82-81-85-248.
Sacramento State will close out its regular season on April 20-22 at the Big Sky Championships which will also take place at Ocatillo.
