WOMEN'S GOLF PLACES NINTH AT ANTEATER INVITATIONAL

DOVE CANYON, Calif. — Freshman Justin Chen and sophomore Samantha Saffold each shot 77 to post the lowest rounds for the Sacramento State women’s golf team in the final round of the Anteater Invitational on Wednesday. The Hornets finished the three-round tournament in ninth place.

Long Beach State won the team title behind a great effort on Wednesday. The 49ers, who entered the day five strokes behind UC Davis and Idaho, shot 289 as a team and won the event by 12 strokes. The team’s total of 891 was followed by UC Davis (903), San Francisco (904), Idaho (907) and UC Irvine (919) in the top five.

Sacramento State shot 326-305-314 and remained in ninth place. The Hornets also led the four Big Sky Conference schools in the field, finishing ahead of Portland State (971), Northern Colorado (988) and Eastern Washington (1,022).

Chen recorded the low round on the team for the second time in three days. The freshman finished the tournament tied for 15th overall at 78-75-77-230. She also had the best finish among Big Sky athletes in the field.

Saffold enjoyed her best round of the tournament on Wednesday. The Sacramento native improved her score each day and tied for 46th overall at 84-82-77-243. Junior Brooke Green tied for 20th overall with rounds f 81-71-80-232.

Freshman Julie Shutler and junior Annie Becker completed the lineup. Shutler carded rounds of 83-77-80-240 to tie for 39th while Becker shot 87-82-82-251 to tie for 60th.

Chelsea Stelzmiller of UC Davis was the medalist with a total of 212 (72-69-71).

Sacramento State will next travel to Chandler, Ariz., for the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic at the Ocotillo Golf Resort. The event will serve as a tune-up for the Hornets who will return to Ocotillo for the Big Sky Championships on April 20-22.
