FRESHMEN LEAD WOMEN'S GOLF IN FIRST ROUND OF HORNET INVITATIONAL

ELK GROVE, Calif. — The Sacramento State women’s golf team showed its youthful side in the first round of the Sacramento State Invitational, Monday afternoon at Valley Hi Country Club. Led by freshmen Justin Chen and Julie Shutler, the Hornets shot 316 as a team and are in third place following the first of two rounds.
Scores were high throughout the opening day as strong winds wreaked havoc. The tournament concludes with another 18-hole round on Tuesday morning. Santa Clara holds the team lead at the midway point with a total of 310. Montana State is second at 311.
Chen shot 76 and is tied for third, one stroke behind Santa Clara’a Miki Ueoka and Montana State’s Kelly Gillum. Chen shot 38 on both the front and back nine. Her front side score was tied for the second best on the day. Shutler is three strokes back and is tied for eighth place. The freshman matched Chen’s 38 on the front nine and posted a 41 on the back.
Junior Brooke Green is tied for 11th with a round of 80 which featured two nines of 40. Sophomore Samantha Saffold is tied for 14th after shooting 42-39-81.
