SHUTLER LEADS WOMEN'S GOLF DURING THE FIRST DAY OF THE FRESNO STATE LEXUS CLASSIC
2/23/2009
FRESNO, Calif. — Led by freshman Julie Shutler, the Sacramento State women’s golf team is tied for seventh place at the Fresno State Lexus Golf Classic following the first two rounds of action on Monday at the Copper River Country Club.
Shutler shot 79 in her opening round but bounced back with a team-best 71 in the afternoon to tie for 16th overall. The freshman opened her second 18 holes with four pars before dropping to 1-over with a bogey on the par-4 16th. From that point, she parred 17 and then birdied the par-4 18th, the par-4 1st and the par-3 second. Shutler continued her momentum with three-straight pars before bogeying the par-5 6th. She bounced right back with three consecutive bars and birdied the par-4 10th. Shutler closed out her round with a bogey on the par-5 11th and a par.
Sophomore Samantha Saffold ranks second on the team and is tied for 20th overall with a first-day total of 75-76-151. Saffold had an up-and-down first round which featured two birdies, 13 pars, one bogey and two double bogeys. Her afternoon round was more stable with 14 pars and four bogeys.
Freshman Justine Chen also saved her best round for later in the day. After shooting 79 in the opening round, Chen began the afternoon with three bogeys and five pars through the first eight holes. From that point, Chen then recorded four consecutive pars before back-to-back birdies dropped her to 1-over with four holes remaining. A bogey on the par-4 ninth and a double bogey on the par-4 10th derailed Chan for a moment before she parred the 11th and birdied the par-4 12th.
Junior Brooke Green led the Hornets in the opening round with a 75. Green, however, followed that effort with a round of 82 in the afternoon. In the morning, Green was steady with two birdies, 11 pars and five bogeys. Freshman Haley Holloway rounded out the lineup at 84-81-165.
San Francisco holds a 1-stroke lead in the team standings with one round to play on Tuesday. The Dons shot 297-293-590 and are just ahead of UC Irvine (297-294-591). UC Davis (594), Long Beach State (601) and San Diego State (601) complete the top five. The Hornets are currently tied for seventh with Santa Clara, Portland State and Fresno State.
