SAFFOLD AND GREEN LEAD WOMEN'S GOLF IN FINAL ROUND OF AZTEC INVITATIONAL

2/17/2009

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — Sophomore Samantha Saffold and junior Brooke Green each shot 76 to lead Sacramento State in the final round of the Aztec Spring Invitational on Tuesday at the Salt Creek Golf Club. The Hornets finished 11th out of 18 teams in the field, which featured 15 teams ranked among the top 100 in the nation.

“This has been an extremely tough week (due to weather),” Director of Golf David Sutherland said. “Our team had great enthusiasm and hit it terrific. We struggled putting as a team, but still managed to beat some teams that were ranked ahead of us and are certainly getting better.”

The Hornets finished the tournament shooting 308-327-311-946. The team was one of the few squads that did not have to complete the rain-shortened second round early Tuesday morning and was able to move up three spots in the standings on Wednesday.

San Jose State held on to win the team title by six strokes. The Spartans show 288-312-300-900 to hold of UC Irvine (287-318-301-906) and San Francisco (293-325-296-914). UC Irvine’s Hillary Packard was the medalist, finishing at 2-over (68-77-73-218).

Due to the delay in start time, the third round featured a shotgun start. Saffold made an early move with an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole early in her round and added a birdie on the par-4 eighth to drop to 3-under through her first four holes. Saffold finished the round with seven pars and seven bogeys. Her three-round total of 77-79-76-231 tied her for 21st overall and made her the only player on the team to card three rounds below 80.

Green bounced back from a rough second round to match Saffold on Tuesday. The junior opened her round with five consecutive pars and player her first seven holes at 1-over. Three bogeys, a double-bogey and two pars left her at 6-over with five holes to play but she began her comeback with a birdie on 17. After parring the par-5 18th, Green bogeyed the par-4 first. She closed strongly by birdying the par-5 second and the par-3 third.

Freshman Justine Chen tied for 38th overall at 77-79-80-236. Chen’s final round featured one birdie, eight pars, and nine bogeys. Fellow freshman Julie Shutler tied for 45th overall at 79-80-79-238. Shutler carded two birdies, seven pars and nine bogeys in her final 18 holes.

Sacramento State will next compete at the Fresno State Invitational on Feb. 23-24.
