WOMEN'S GOLF TIED FOR SIXTH AFTER FIRST DAY OF HAWKEYE INTERCOLLEGIATE

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Freshman Justin Chen led the Sacramento State women’s golf team in the first round of the Hawkeye Invitational and sophomore Samantha Saffold had the low round in the afternoon to help the team to a sixth-place tie on Saturday.
The Hornets had rounds of 318 and 315 and are tied with Wisconsin for sixth place with one round to play on Sunday. Ball State and Iowa are tied for the top spot with a two-round total of 612. Northern Iowa is two strokes back in third place while Illinois State (627) and Longwood (628) complete the top five.
In the morning round, Chen shot 78 and was closely fallowed by fellow freshman Julie Shutler’s 79. The team also counted an 80 from Brooke Green and Saffold’s 81. The afternoon saw Saffold fire a season-best 77. Sasha Cruz recorded a season-low 78 and Chen and Green each carded a round of 80.
Through 36 holes, Saffold and Chen are tied for 26th place with a total of 158. Green is tied for 38th at 160, Shutler is tied for 46th at 162 and Cruz totaled 164 to tie for 58th.
Olivia Lansing of Drake holds the individual lead with rounds of 71-76-147. Ball State’s Brittany Kelly and Kirsty O’Connor and Longwood’s Kameron Carter are each tied for second with a total of 150.
The tournament will conclude with 18 holes on Sunday.
