USC SITS IN FIRST PLACE FOLLOWING FIRST ROUND OF NCAA WEST REGIONAL

LINCOLN, Calif. — Led by Paula Moreno’s 68, USC scored 283 and holds a 5-stroke lead following the first round of the NCAA Div. I Women’s Golf West Regional, Thursday afternoon at the Lincoln Hills Golf Club.
USC is followed by Tulsa who shot 287 and was the only other team to finish below par. UNLV sits third at an even-par 288 while Arkansas (291) and Oklahoma State (293) completed the top five.
Individually, Alison Walshe of Arizona matched Moreno for the first day low. The pair hold a 1-stroke lead over four individuals who shot 69. That group is comprised of Arkansas’ Stacy Lewis, Arizona State’s Azahara Munoz, Oklahoma State’s Jaclyn Sweeney and Tulsa’s Michaela Cavener.
Moreno shot 34 on both sides of her round. She finished with five birdies and just one bogey during her 18 holes. Walshe carded 33 on the front nine and posted a 35 on the back. Her round consisted of six birdies and two bogeys.
There were four eagles recorded during the round, including Oregon’s Kendra Little who holed out her on the par-4 1st hole. Overall, the 108 rounds averaged 75.60.
The tournament will continue with the second round on Friday. The first tee time is set for 8 a.m. The top eight teams and the lowest scoring individuals from non-advancing teams in the three-round tournament will advance to the NCAA Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
