DENVER HOLDS LEAD AFTER FIRST TWO ROUNDS OF NCAA REGIONAL PREVIEW HOSTED BY SACRAMENTO STATE

3/31/2008

LINCOLN, Calif. — Led by two of the top seven golfers in the field, 12th-ranked Denver holds a 12-stroke lead after the opening two rounds of the NCAA Western Regional Preview hosted by Sacramento State on Monday. The three-round tournament will conclude on Tuesday with 18 holes at Lincoln Hills Golf Club.

Denver surged ahead after the opening round with a combined team score of 288. The Pioneers overcame unseasonably cool temperatures which pushed the start of the tournament back 30 minutes due to frost on the greens. Katie Kempter shot a 2-under 70 in the opening round and was trailed by a 71 from Stephanie Sherlock. Kempter later added a 73 in her second round and is tied for second at 1-under. The Pioneers also received a strong effort from Dawn Shockley who is tied for fourth at 74-71-145.

Washington State is second at 297-293-590 and is followed by Oregon (300-292-592), UNLV (301-296-597), UC Irvine (299-299-598) and Fresno State (305-293-598) in the top five.

Individually, WSU’s Amy Eneroth holds a 4-stroke lead. Eneroth opened with a round of 71 then blistered the course in the afternoon for a tournament low 68.

Sacramento State is 14th overall in the 19-team field. The Hornets shot 307 in the morning and added a second-round score of 308. Kim Coppin posted the lowest total on the team, 80-73-153, and is tied for 41st place. Samantha Saffold and Heather LeMaster are tied for 51st with matching scores of 73-81-154. Erica Yoshino (T62, 81-75-156) and Brooke Green (T91, 85-79-164) completed the Hornet lineup.

The tournament serves as a test run for most of the teams as Sacramento State will host the NCAA West Regional, May 8-10.

The final round of play will begin at 8:30 with a shotgun start. Live stats can be tracked at www.golfstat.com.
