WOMEN'S GOLF BEGINS FIRST NCAA REGIONAL APPEARANCE ON THURSDAY
5/9/2007
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — For the first time in school history, the Sacramento State women’s golf team will compete at the NCAA West Regional beginning on Thursday. The 54-hole event will be hosted by BYU at Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club in St. George, Utah.
The Hornets are one of 21 teams to earn an invitation to the event. The top eight teams for each of the three regionals will advance to the NCAA Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla. The top two individuals outside of those eight schools will also move on.
Sacramento State most recently won the Big Sky Conference Championship by 25 strokes to claim the automatic berth into the field. The Hornets are ranked 20th and will be paired with Memphis and Columbia-Barnard during the first two rounds. Sacramento State’s first golfer (No. 5) will tee-off at 1:20 p.m. while the final golfer (No. 1) will get under way at 2 p.m.
Arizona State, which is the automatic qualifier from the Pac-10 Conference and top-ranked team in the nation, is the top seed in the regional. The Sun Devils are followed by Pepperdine, Florida, Oklahoma State and BYU. In all, 17 of the 21 teams are ranked among the top 50 teams in this week’s Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.
A Johnny Miller Signature golf course, Entrada at Snow Canyon opened in September 1996 and is a par 71 that plays at 6,234 yards. The course is built on an ancient lava field and challenges players with narrow fairways.
