WOMEN'S GOLF FIFTH FOLLOWING FIRST ROUND IN CARMEL

CARMEL, Calif. --- Fifth-ranked Pepperdine showed its strength by placing four of its golfers in the top five following the first round of the Santa Clara Colby Invitational on Monday. Sacramento State is tied for fifth place after concluding the wet and soggy round.

The Waves’ Eileen Vargas shot 70 to lead all golfers. Pepperdine’s Carolina Llano and Santa Clara’s Megan Stoddart are two strokes back in a tie for second.

Sacramento State was led by sophomore Heather LeMaster who shot 77. Kim Coppin fired an 80 to tie for 22nd while Jennifer Parkes is tied for 39th at 84. The team also counted an 86 from Emily Longcrier.

In the team standings, host Santa Clara is 18 strokes behind Pepperdine (289). UC Riverside is third at 313, Cal State Northridge is fourth at 322 and Sacramento State and Portland is tied for fifth at 327.

The tournament concludes with a 18 holes on Tuesday.
