CHULA VISTA, Calif. --- Sacramento State junior Margaux Sheehan shot 74 in the third and final round of the TaylorMade/adidas Lady Aztec Classic to complete her wire-to-wire victory at the Auld Course on Tuesday. Sheehan became just the second Hornet women’s golfer to win a three-round tournament since the program was conceived in 1996-97.The Anchorage, Alaska, native began the event by tying the school record with a 68 in the first round on Monday. She added a second-round 75 and led by one stroke entering Tuesday. The final round was plagued by heavy rain and Sheehan came to the 18th hole tied for the lead. However, she birdied the hole and watched her playing partner record a triple-bogey to claim a five-stroke victory.
During the tournament, she led all players with an average of 4.03 on the par 4’s and was second with a 2.92 average on the par 3’s. Sheehan also tallied one eagle, eight birdies and 36 pars during the 54 holes. Her three-round total of 217 was nine strokes better than the previous school record of 226 set by Sarah Kuykendall last year.
As a team, Sacramento State finished second, 10 strokes behind host San Diego State. The Aztecs shot 300-305-301-906 while the Hornets recorded rounds of 293, 314 and 309 to finish at 916. Sacramento State’s first round score easily broke the previous school record of 297.
Montana (919), Northern Arizona (924) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (932) completed the top five in the 13-team field.
Erica Yoshino finished second among Sacramento State competitors after shooting 80-75-77-232 to tie for 23rd. Emily Longcrier tied for 27th at 76-80-78-234 and Heather LeMaster (72-84-80-236) tied for 29th. Kim Coppin completed the lineup by tying for 40th at 77-85-80-242.
The women’s team completes its fall season on Nov. 6-7 at the Cal Poly Tournament.
