WOMEN'S GOLF FINISHES SECOND AT OPENING TOURNAMENT

SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- The Sacramento State women''s golf team concluded its opening tournament of the season by shooting 306 and finishing one stroke behind San Diego State in the team standings at the La Quinta Inn and Suites Shootout in Flagstaff, Ariz.

The Hornets, who held a one-stroke lead heading into the final day, recorded its lowest 54-hole score in season history at 309-306-615. The previous record of 623 came in 2004 at the Colby Invitational. Tuesday''s round of 306 ranks as the second best single-round team score in school history.

Erica Yoshino was the top finisher on the squad, tying for second place at 76-77-153. Jennifer Parkes fired a team-best 75 on Tuesday and moved into a tie for 10th place at 154. Margaux Sheehan joined Parkes in 10th with rounds of 76 and 78. Kim Coppin fired 81-76-157 to tie for 16th while Annie Becker recorded a 78-80-158 to tie for 19th.

San Diego State, which is ranked 30th in the preseason rankings, shot 311-303-614 to claim the title. Megan McLeod was the medalist finishing the tournament 1-under (73-72-145).

The Hornet men were able to recover from a rough start on Monday but finished 14th at the Purple and Red Invitational hosted by Weber State. The Hornets began the tournament with rounds of 310 and 311 on Monday but rebounded with a 291 on Tuesday.

Santa Clara won the team title by two strokes with a 287-283-285-855. Weber State and Boise State tied for second place.

Helping the Hornets on Tuesday were four rounds of 74 or better. Chad Wood shot 71 over the final 18 holes to finish tied for 48th at 78-78-71-227. John Bowen recorded the highest finish by tying for 42nd with rounds of 79-73-74-226. Brian Little (77-82-72-231) and Cody Miller (78-79-74-231) tied for 65th while Patrick Miller (77-81-82-240) tied for 78th.

Dustin Primm of Utah was the medalist after crushing the field on Tuesday with a tournament-best 64. Primm held the lead entering the round after shooting 70-68 on Monday.

Both the Sacramento State men''s and women''s teams will be in action at Nevada next week. The women will play a 54-hole tournament which runs from Monday through Wednesday. The men will begin with two rounds on Tuesday and conclude with a final round on Wednesday.
