WOMEN’S GOLF HOLDS FIRST ROUND LEAD AT OPENING TOURNAMENT

SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- The Sacramento State women’s golf team opened the 2005-06 season on a strong note, staking a one-stroke lead following the first round of the La Quinta Inn & Suites Shootout Monday afternoon at the Continental Country Club in Flagstaff, Ariz.

The Hornets shot 309 as a team and lead UC Riverside by one stroke. San Diego State, which is ranked 30th in the preseason poll, is third at 311.

Sacramento State was paced by Margaux Sheehan and Erica Yoshino who each fired rounds of 76 and are tied for third place. Megan McLeod of San Diego State and Western New Mexico’s Kim Cammer are tied for the lead at an even-par 73.

Newcomer Annie Becker is tied for 11th at 78 while Jennifer Parkes is tied for 16th at 79 to complete the scorers for the Hornets.

The tournament concludes on Tuesday with the final round,

The Hornet men were not as fortunate in their event. The team shot 310 and 311 and are sitting in 14th place at the Purple and Red Invitational hosted by Weber State. The host Wildcats shot 565 and hold a five-stroke edge of Santa Clara in the team standings.

Individually, Dustin Primm of Utah shot 70-68-138 and holds a one-stroke lead over two golfers. Sacramento State’s top individual is John Bowen who shot 79-73-152 and is tied for 48th.

The 54-hole tournament ends with one more round on Tuesday.
