SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- The Sacramento State women’s golf team finds itself in 13th place and the men finished 17th at their respective tournaments on Tuesday. The Hornet women shot 320 in the second round of the three-round Bobcat Desert Classic in Goodyear, Ariz. The men tallied 310 in the final round at the Braveheart Classic in Beaumont, Calif.The women’s team was led by Sarah Kuykendall for the second straight day. Kuykendall, who shot 75 on Monday, added a team-low 78 on Tuesday and is currently tied for 23rd place. Kathryn Cotter and Erica Yoshino each were one stroke back in the second round at 79. Cotter is tied for 35th at 77-79-156 while Yoshino rebounded from a rough first round to record 88-79-167. Margaux Sheehan is tied for 70th at 79-84-163 while Jennifer Parkes is tied for 75th at 80-86-166.
Idaho maintained its lead following the second round and has a three-stroke edge over Boise State. The Vandals shot 294-303-597. Montana State sits in third, six strokes off the pace, while Western Michigan is 12 strokes back. Northern Arizona and North Texas are tied for fifth with a two-day total of 616.
Individually, Katie Street of Boise State has shot two rounds of 72 to hold a one-stroke lead over Renee Skidmore (Idaho) and Kylie Anderson (Montana State).
The tournament, which is one of the few three-round events for the women, will conclude on Wednesday.
John Bowen and Matt Montez led the men’s team on Tuesday with final round scores of 73 and 74, respectively. Montez finished with the lowest three-round total of the team at 72-77-74-223 to tie for 35th. Bowen was one stroke back and tied for 40th at 74-77-73-224. Brian Little, who opened the tournament with a team-best 69 on Monday, shot 81 on Tuesday to tied for 54th place. Ryan McConnell finished in 100th after shooting 80-80-82-242. Chad Wood completed the lineup in 104th with a total of 247 (83-79-85).
Host UC Riverside won the team title by pulling away from the field in the third round. The Highlanders shot 280 on Tuesday, seven strokes better than the next team, to finish at 277-293-280-850. Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara, UCLA and Saint Mary’s rounded out the top five.
UCR’s Brendan Steele was the medalist after shooting three rounds in the 60s. Steele fired 68-66-69-203 to finish two-strokes ahead of Travis Bertoni of Cal Poly.
The men will next compete at the Cal Poly Tournament on March 24-25.
