SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- The Sacramento State women’s golf team is in eighth place and the men sit in 16th following the first day of competition at their respective tournaments. The Hornet women shot 311 and are 17 shots off the pace at the Bobcat Desert Classic in Goodyear, Ariz. The men shot rounds of 295 and 309 and are 36 strokes back of first-place Cal Poly at the Braveheart Classic in Beaumont, Calif.The women’s team was led by Sarah Kuykendall who shot 75 and is tied for 16th place. Kathryn Cotter was two-strokes back and is tied for 27th. Sacramento State also counted scores from Margaux Sheehan (79) and Jennifer Parkers (80). The pair are tied for 42nd and 52nd, respectively.
Idaho currently leads the team standings with a first-round 294. Western Michigan is second at 298 while Boise State sits in third at 304. Individually, Jody Chandonnet of Grand Canyon shot a one-under 71 to claim the lead. Seven golfers are tied for second place at even par.
The tournament, which is one of the few three-round events for the women, will continue with the second round on Tuesday before concluding on Wednesday.
The men were guided by Brian Little who shot 69 and 76 to tie for 21st. Little was tied for fourth place after his stellar first round which placed him three-under. Freshman Matt Montez is tied for 38th with rounds of 72 and 77. John Bowen added 74-77-151 and Ryan McConnell shot 80-80-160. Chad Wood completed the lineup at 83-79-162.
The Hornets were in 10th place as a team following the first round. Sacramento State shot 295 but posted a 309 in the second round to drop into 16th place. Cal Poly tops the leaderboard with rounds of 282 and 286. Host UC Riverside is two shots back at 277-293-570 and Idaho is four off at 285-287-572.
Individually, UCR’s Brendan Steele had a three-stroke lead after firing 68-66-134 (8-under). Chris Heintz of UCLA is second with 69-68-137 and three golfers are tied for third.
The tournament concludes with a single round on Tuesday.
