WOMEN'S GOLF FINISHES IN FIFTH AT BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIP

GOODYEAR, Ariz. --- Portland State's Taya Battistella tied her own league record and the Vikings won their first Big Sky Conference women’s golf title in school history. The three-round tournament concluded with 18 holes on Wednesday at the Palm Valley Golf Club.

Sacramento State saved its best effort for the final round, shooting 312. The Hornets ended the tournament in fifth place after shooting 323-318-312-953.

Battistella matched her own conference mark for a three-round total after scoring 68-74-77-219. Her effort was five strokes better than teammate Rebecca Randolph (75-78-71-224).

As a team, PSU competed the tournament at 294-310-301-905 to edge second-place Eastern Washington (302-306-306-914).

Northern Arizona (934) and Weber State (940) finished in third and fourth, respectively. Montana State (954) was sixth, Montana (956) was seventh and Idaho State (989) rounded out the field.

The Hornets' top finisher was Tracy Nichols who tied for ninth. Nichols entered the third-round tied for fourth but shot 79 on Wednesday for a total of 232.

Mackenzie Francis overcame an opening-round 80 to tie for 12th at 234. Sophomore Courntey Cotter shot 76 in the final round to move into a tie for 16th at 76. Lindsey Oleksa (36th) and Christy Ferrero (T-37th) completed the Hornet field.

The tournament marked the final competition for the team during the 2003 season.
