3/4/2003

SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- The Sacramento State women’s golf team placed sixth at the Bobcat Desert Classic and men tied for 11th at the UCR Braveheart Classic Tuesday afternoon.

The Hornet women ended the two-round event with a total of 628, 19 strokes behind champion Northern Arizona. The tournament was held at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz. The men’s team could not overcome a rough second round and concluded its three-round tournament at 892, Host UC Riverside ran away from the field, shooting 19-under and winning the tournament by 23 strokes over second-place Denver.

Individually, the women’s team was paced by Tracy Nichols’ fourth-place finish. Nichols shot rounds of 73 and 76 to finish six strokes off the pace

of medalist Randi Gauthier of North Texas. Sophomore Courtney Cotter recorded her second-straigt strong performance by tying for sixth. Cotter, who tied for second last week at the San Diego State Invitational, shot 75-77-152.

Bryan O’Malley guided the men’s team with a tie for 11th. O’Malley shot 70-72-74-216 to finish even. Senior Tanner Makimoto tied for 14th at

72-75-70-217.

The men were forced to complete their second round on Tuesday morning due to the fact that darkness cut Monday’s play short. Conditions were not much

better on Tuesday as a storm produced wind and rain at the PGA of Southern California course.
