MEN'S GOLF TIES FOR FOURTH, WOMEN FINISH 10TH IN FIRST SPRING TOURNAMENT

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--The Sacramento State men's and women's golf teams

opened the 2001 Spring season with fourth and 10th place finishes,

respectively. The men tied Grand Canyon University for fourth at the

Aggie Invitational at El Macero Country Club in Davis, Calif. The

women opened their season at the Bay Area Classic hosted by San

Francisco at the Hiddenbrooke Country Club in Vallejo, Calif.

The Aggie Invitational was won by Cal State Bakersfield with a

three-round total of 873. The Hornets concluded the two-day event at

894. Washington took home the Bay Area Classic crown with a total of

602. The Hornets finished 68 strokes back at 670.

Individually, the men's team was led by junior Bill Hurwitz who tied

for seventh with a 221. Hurwitz shot rounds of 73, 71 and 77. Cal

State Bakersfield's Kevin Klebe was the tournament's medalist with a

total of 213 (-3). Klebe was joined by teammate Mike Plate (216) and

Dan Warburton (218) who finished second and third.

Sacramento State also received top-30 efforts from Philip Cuthbertson

and Craig Callens who tied for 23rd at 226. Tanner Makimoto tied for

27th with a total of 227.

On the women's side, Washington's Kelli Kamimura ran away with the

individual title after firing two rounds of 69. Heather Rollo of San

Diego State placed second, 11 shots off the lead.

The Hornets were led by Erin Brannigan. The senior tied for 26th

after shooting rounds of 81 and 82. Sophomore Courtney Cotter tied

for 31st at 165.
