KAPOLEI, Hawaii — The Sacramento State women's golf team rallied behind a school-record tying round of 66 from Tess Blair to win the team title at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Wednesday at Kapolei Golf Course. Along with claiming the team championship, the Hornets also had Blair win the individual crown with a three-round total of 71-70-66-207 which set the school record. The team's total of 291-287-285-863 is tied for the fourth best in program history.
The freshman was bogey free during her round and put Sacramento State into the lead with an eagle on the 491-yard, par-5 17th. The Hornets entered that hole down by one stroke with Blair as the last golfer on the course. Her eagle along with a double bogey from BYU gave Sacramento State a three-shot victory. Blair played the front nine of the course at 3-under with birdies on Nos. 3, 6 and 7. She then parred eight straight holes before a birdie on the par-4 15th. Her round of 66 ties her with Julia Becker in the Hornet record book. Becker posted her score in the final round of the Big Sky Championship last season. Blair's 54-hole score bettered Corinne Viden's performance at last year's Gunrock Invitational by one stroke.
Sophomore Sydney Smith ranked second on the team during the third round with a career best of 71. Smith was 1-over through the first nine holes after a bogey on the par-4 fourth. That proved to be her lone bogey of the round and she returned to even with a birdie on the par-4 11th. Following a pair of pars, she birdied the par-5 14th and closed with four more pars.
The rest of the team score on Wednesday was made up from a pair of 74s from Nishtha Madan and Sofie Babic. Madan tied for 13th overall at 72-71-74-217. She had a birdie and two bogeys on both sides of the course during the third round. Babic overcame a rough start which left her at 4-over through nine holes. She was 2-under on the back nine with birdies on Nos. 11 and 16. She shot 74-72-74-220 to tie for 19th place.
Sacramento State also continued to have success from its individuals playing in the tournament. Sophomore Miki Manta was bogey free on Wednesday and finished at 4-under par with a round of 68 to set her career low by 10 strokes. Manta had birdies on the par-4 second and the par-5 seventh, 14th and 17th. Manta's score is tied for the sixth best all-time at Sacramento State.
Freshman Cloe Grand tied for ninth overall at 70-70-76-216. Grand started on the 10th hole and was 1-over at the midway point following two birdies and three bogeys. She was 3-over on the front nine with three bogeys.
The tournament was the final fall event for the team. Sacramento State will next compete at the UCF Challenge in Orlando, Fla., on Feb. 2-4.
