CLE ELUM, Wash. — Sacramento State's Julia Becker completed her collegiate career in style as the senior shot 68 during the final round of the NCAA Cle Elum Regional on Wednesday. Becker and Corinne Viden were both under par during the round and helped the Hornets shoot an even-par 288 and finish in 13th place overall.
Becker's score was the lowest recorded by a Big Sky Conference woman at an NCAA regional and her 54-hole total of 75-75-68-218 ranks third all-time in the league record book. Becker started Wednesday with five consecutive pars before picking her first of five birdies on the par-5 15th. After another par, she closed the back nine holes with birdies on the par-3 17th and par-5 18th to make the turn at 3-under. Becker continued her surge with two pars on the front half and then birdied the par-4 third to fall to 4-under. After a par on No. 4, her lone bogey on the day came on the par-4 fifth hole. However, that was immediately answered with a birdie on the par-4 sixth as well as three pars and tied her for 17th overall.
Becker completed the season with a scoring average of 73.25 which set the Sacramento State single-season record. She will also leave the Hornets ranked second in career scoring average. This spring, Becker set the school single-round record with a 6-under par round of 66 during the final round of the Big Sky Championship. She also had three rounds of 68, including today.
Nishtha Madan tied for 22nd at 71-75-73-219. Madan was extremely steady during the final round with 14 pars during the day. She was 1-under throughout most of the round with a birdies on the par-5 15th and 18th and a bogey on the par-3 17th. She parred her first eight holes on the front nine before ending with a double bogey on the par-4 ninth.
Viden started with a pair of pars before a bogey on the par-4 12th. She moved under par after birdies on the par-5 14th, the par-4 16th and par-5 18th to make the turn at 2-under. The sophomore was 1-over on the front nine with eight pars and a bogey on the par-5 fourth. Her total of 79-74-71-224 tied for 51st overall.
Sofie Babic also posted her best round of the tournament on Wednesday and finished in 78th place at 80-78-76-234. Babic overcome a pair of birdies on the first two holes by playing the next 14 at even par. During that stretch, she had a birdie on the par-3 13th and a bogey on the par-4 16th along with 12 pars. She closed the tournament with bogeys on Nos. 8 and 9 to leave her at 4-over on the day.
Sydney Smith shot 79 to complete the lineup. Smith had three birdies, six bogeys and a pair of double bogeys during her round. She tied for 79th overall at 77-79-79-235.
With USC in control of the team title the biggest drama during the day came in the battle for the sixth automatic berth to the NCAA Championships. That spot was claimed by UCF which totaled 874 to beat Ohio State by one stroke and Oregon State by three. USC finished at 20-under as a team and was 15 strokes ahead of Washington who was second.
