SUTHERLAND NAMED BIG SKY WOMEN'S GOLF COACH OF THE YEAR FOR THIRD-STRAIGHT SEASON

OGDEN, Utah — Sacramento State's David Sutherland was named the 2019 Big Sky Jeff Smith Women's Golf Coach of the Year, it was announced today. The award is the third straight coach of the year honor for Sutherland, and he joins Felicia Johnston (2003-05) as the only coach to win three consecutive Big Sky Coach of the Year awards.

Sacramento State completed a dominant regular season by winning the Big Sky Championship by 20 strokes. The team had all five of its golfers place among the top 20, including Corinne Viden and Julia Becker who finished second and tied for fifth, respectively. The Hornets completed the tournament with an emphatic third round which saw the team shoot 280 (8-under par) led by a school-record round of 66 from Becker.

Along with the conference title, Sacramento State also recorded a win at the Gunrock Invitational in March at Del Paso Country Club. The team placed among the top four in seven of its 10 regular season events.

For the second straight season, Sacramento State was the only team in the league to have all five members of its lineup earn all-Big Sky honors. Viden and Becker were named to the first team, Nishtha Madan and Sofie Babic were placed on the second team and Sydney Smith earned honorable mention. All five averaged 75.67 or better with Becker (73.32) and Viden (73.52) both on pace to break the school single-season record.

"It's always an honor to be named Coach of the Year but it would not be possible without the great play of our team and the hard work of (assistant coach) Cindy Mah-Lyford," Sutherland said. "Going into this season, we knew it could be special and the team lived up to the challenge while playing the toughest schedule in school history.

"To have this award named after my good friend Jeff Smith makes it more special. Jeff was a mentor to me when I first began coaching and I miss seeing his friendly face at the tournaments."

The Big Sky Coach of the Year award is named after former Weber State women's golf coach Jeff Smith who passed away in 2016 at the age of 61.

Sacramento State will continue its season on May 6-8 at the NCAA Cle Elum Regional which will be hosted by Washington. The Hornets are seeded 14th in the tournament and will be paired with Ohio State and UCF in the opening round.
