MACON, Ga. — Led by a 2-under par round of 70 from Corinne Viden, the Sacramento State women's golf team had the third-best score of the second round at the Brickyard Collegiate on Tuesday.
The Hornets shot 293 in the afternoon which followed a first-round total of 304. The team sits in eighth place heading into the final round on Tuesday. Host Mercer (577) leads the tournament by one stroke over Charlotte. The rest of the top five is comprised of East Tennessee State (582), North Carolina (589) and UTSA (589).
After shooting 76 in the first round, Viden started the second round with a double bogey on the par-4 16th hole. She birdied the par-4 first but returned to 2-over after a bogey on No. 3. Viden parred the next five holes and then blistered the rest of her round with four birdies over her final seven holes. She started the streak with a birdie on the par-5 ninth and, following two pars, birdied the par-5 12th and par-4 13th. Her final birdie came on the par-4 15th. Her 36-hole total of 146 ties her for 13th place and places her eight strokes off the individual lead.
Julie Becker is tied for 23rd at 76-73-149. Becker was even through her first 11 holes of the first round with two birdies and a double bogey. The round was then halted due to lightning and once play resumed, she was 4-over. In the second round, Becker parred 15 of her first 17 holes to go along with two bogeys. She closed the round with a birdie on the par-5 12th to finish at 1-over.
Nishtha Madan had rounds of 73-78-151 and is tied for 33rd. Madan led Sacramento State in the first round and finished at 1-over. She began with 14 consecutive pars before a bogey on the par-5 10th. She dropped back to even with a birdie on the par-5 12th but ended with a bogey on No. 13. Madan's second round had one birdie and seven bogeys.
Sydney Smith is two strokes back of Madan after shooting 79-74-153 which ties her for 47th place. Smith had one birdie and eight birdies in the first round. Her second round started with seven straight pars before she eagled the 486-yard par-5 sixth. Three bogeys over a four-hole stretch moved Smith to 1-over but she returned to even after a birdie on the par-4 13th. The freshman had two bogeys over her final three holes to close at 2-over.
Sofie Babic shot 82 in the first round and provided a score towards the team total with a 76 in the afternoon. Babic's was 1-under through 11 holes of the second round with the help of birdies on the par-5 sixth and par-4 seventh. She moved back into the black with a double bogey on the next hole and had three additional bogeys on Nos. 10-12.
The Hornets were also represented by Katie Dunaway who was competing as an individual. Dunaway carded rounds of 80 and 82 and is tied for 68th. Her first round had a birdie and nine bogeys while her second was comprised of a birdie, seven bogeys and two double bogeys.
The third round will begin at 5:30 a.m. PDT with a shotgun start. Sacramento State will be paired with UCF, Troy and Kennesaw State.
