WOMEN'S GOLF FINISHES FOURTH AT LAMKIN INVITATIONAL

RANCHO SANTE FE, Calif. — Julia Becker earned a 3-up win to highlight the effort by the Sacramento State women's golf during the final day of the Lamkin Invitational. The Hornets finished in fourth place after falling to 46th-ranked San Diego State, 4-1.

Becker never trailed in her match against Kitty Tam. The senior took a lead on her second hole with a par on the par-3 fifth and then added birdies on the par-4 sixth and seventh to move to 3-up. She alternated losses and wins over the next seven holes to stand at 2-up through the 14th. During that stretch, Becker had an eagle on the par-5 ninth and a birdie on the par-3 11th but also had four bogeys. The pair halved Nos. 15-17 before Becker won with a par on the par-5 18th compared to a bogey from Tam.

San Diego State picked up an early point as Gioia Carpinelli defeated Nishtha Madan, 7&5. Carpinelli won four of the first five holes to take command. Madan birdied the par-3 16th  before Carpinelli closed out the contest with a pair of pars on Nos. 17 and 18.

Corinne Viden lost 3&2 to April Ranches. Viden won the first hole with a par on the par-4 fourth but saw the lead swing to Ranches on the ninth hole and never return. Ranches won Nos. 9-11 to go 3-up and only lost one hole over the remainder of the match.

Fernanda Escauriza downs Sydney Smith, 4&2. After halving the first two holes, Escauriza won three of the next four holes to lead 3-up through six holes. That advantage proved to be enough as the pair halved seven of last 10 holes with Escauriza winning two and Smith one during the stretch.

Sofie Babic had three birdies but dropped a 3&2 decision to Sara Kjellker. Babic lost her first three holes and trailed 5-up through 12 holes. She made up some ground with a birdie on the par-17th and a par on No. 18 to draw within three. However, Kjellker sealed the match after the next two holes were halved.

Sacramento State finished the tournament with a 1-2 record in match play. The 12-team field featured six school ranked among the top 50 in the country. Sixth-ranked Vanderbilt won the team title with a 4-1 win over California.

The Hornets will next play at the Brickyard Collegiate in Macon, Ga., on April 8-9. The team will then head to Boulder City, Nev., for the Big Sky Championships on April 19-21.
