WOMEN'S GOLF FALLS TO NO. 6 VANDERBILT IN SEMIS OF LAMKIN INVITATIONAL

RANCHO SANTE FE, Calif. — The Sacramento State women's golf team had its run for a title at the Lamkin Invitational halted with a 4.5-0.5 loss to sixth-ranked Vanderbilt this afternoon at The Farms Golf Club. The Hornets will face 46th-ranked San Diego State on Wednesday in the third-place match.

Nishtha Madan finished all square with Abbey Carlson to give the team its half point. After halving the first four holes, Madan won three of the next four to take a 3-up lead following a birdie on the par-5 ninth. Carlson responded with wins on Nos. 10 and 11 to pull back within one before Madan parred the par-3 14th to move 2-up. Carlson birdied No. 15 and No. 18 to square the match and the two bogeyed the par-4 first hole to finish the contest.

Julia Becker lost 2&1 to Courtney Zeng in the closest of the other four matches. Zeng led the entire time, winning the first hole with a par. Her lead eventually grew to 3-up after a par on the par-4 11th before Becker birdied the par-5 12th. After Zeng won the 15th, Becker answered with a par to win the 16th but was unable to extend the match after halving No. 17.

Corinne Viden fell to Morgan Baxendale 4&3 at the No. 2 match. Baxendale led 1-up through eight holes and was 2-up through 11. She put the match away with a birdie on No. 12 and a par on No. 14.

Sydney Smith started her match against Louise Yu on the third hole with a birdie and moved to 2-up with a par on No. 7. Yu toed the match on No. 10 and took the lead for good with a par on No. 12 en route to a 3&2 win. Overall, Smith had four birdies in her 16 holes to lead the Hornets on Tuesday.

Sofie Babic also took an early lea with a par on the third hole but saw Auston Kim bounce back for a 3&2 win. Babic won three holes during her round.

Four of Vanderbilt's five players are ranked in the top 100 of Golfstat's individual rankings. The group is led by Zeng and Carlson who are 33rd and 34th among Div. I golfers. Kim is currently 58th while Baxendale is 97th.

The Hornets will close out the tournament on Wednesday against host SDSU which fell to Cal, 3.5-1.5 on Tuesday.
