FAIRFAX, Ariz. — The Sacramento State women's golf team closed the first day of the Juli Inkster Meadow Club Collegiate in a familiar position — atop the leaderboard in a talented field. The Hornets, who most recently ran away with the title at The Gunrock Invitational, hold a 1-stroke lead over Tulsa heading into the final round on Tuesday. The 12-team field features three schools ranked among the top 50 nationally as well as two from the Big Ten and a pair from the Pac-12.

Sacramento State was even through the first round and found itself in fifth place. The Hornets were led by Corinne Viden who tied the school record with a 5-under par round of 67. The sophomore, who was the medalist at The Gunrock and also set the school 54-hole record, jumped out to a quick start and never looked back in the morning. She birdied the par-4 fourth to start her round and followed with birdies on the par-4 seventh and 10th holes to drop to 3-under. Her lone bogey of the morning came on the par-5 13th. After five pars, Viden jumped to 4-under with an eagle on the 492-yard par-5 first hole. She wrapped up the morning with a birdie on No. 3. Viden's score matches Nishtha Madan's mark from the second round of the 2017 Rainbow Wahine Invitational as the best in school history.

Julia Becker also finished under par in the first round with a 71. Becker was 1-over through her first nine holes with birdies on the par-5 ninth and par-3 14th along with three bogeys. She played her final nine holes at 2-under without a bogey. That stretch was highlighted by birdies on the par-5 first and par-4 second.

Sofie Babic and Sydney Smith each shot 75 to give the team a total of 288 in the round. Babic had a double bogey on her second hole and was never able to get back to par during the round. A bogey on No. 9 provided a bright spot but she finished with 14 pars and two bogeys.

Smith had a birdie, two bogeys and a double bogey over her first five holes. She rebounded with eight consecutive pars before adding a bogey on No. 2 and a birdie on No. 4. Overall, she played her final 13 holes even.

Becker guided the team in the second round and is tied for second overall. The senior shot 69 to finish one stroke off her career best. Becker had four birdies with only one bogey during the round. She opened with three pars before a birdie on the par-5 18th. After three more pars, she lowered her score to 3-under with birdies on the par-5 13th and 15th holes. Three additional pars preluded a birdie on the first hole. Another stretch of three pars kept her at 4-under through 17 holes but she ended with a bogey on the par-3 fifth.

Babic also finished below par with a 71 and sits in 20th place. Unlike her first round, she was even or below par for most of the afternoon. The junior was 2-under through her first nine holes with birdies on Nos. 8 and 9 as well as seven pars. She fell back to even with bogeys on Nos. 14 and 15 but immediately answered with a birdie on the par-4 16th. Once back on the front side of the course, she had a birdie on the par-5 first and a bogey on the par-4 third.

Nishtha Madan ranked third on the team in the second round with a 1-over par round of 73. Madan had four birdies with one bogey on her first 10 holes. However, she bogeyed four of her final eight holes to move back over par.

Viden is in fourth place overall following a 74 in the afternoon. She continued her red-hot play from the first round with a birdie on No. 4 to start the second. That streak finally came to an end with consecutive bogeys on Nos. 6 and 7. Two more bogeys (Nos. 10 and 13) moved her to 3-over before she ended by playing her final eight holes at 1-under.

Sydney Smith posted her second round of 75 and is tied for 36th place. Smith had a birdie, 14 pars, a bogey and a double bogey in the round. The team was also represented by Katie Dunaway who was competing as an individual. Dunaway shot 74-77-151 and is tied for 41st place.

Sacramento State will be paired with Tulsa and Rutgers in the third round which will have a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
