KAPOLEI, Oahu — After rain cancelled the first two rounds of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Tuesday, the Sacramento State women's golf team sprinted to a fourth-place finish in the only round of the tournament on Halloween. The Hornets shot 290 as a team to finish at 2-over par. The team was three strokes behind Florida International which won the event at 1-under par. Nebraska and New Mexico State were even to tie for second place.
Sacramento State was led by Sofie Babic who shot 70 to finish 2-under and tie for second place. The finish marked the eighth top-five showing for Babic during her career and the fourth time she's been first or second. The junior started with a birdie on the par-4 fourth but was 1-over just three holes later after bogeys on Nos. 5 and 7. Those would be her only bogeys of the day as Babic punished the back nine with birdies on the par-4 10th and 11th and par-5 17th. She ended her round with four consecutive pars.
Nishtha Madan and Julia Becker each were even with rounds of 72 to tie for 13th place. Madan was never worse than even during her round as she had a pair of birdies and bogeys. She opened play with four pars before a birdie on the par-4 ninth and a bogey on the par-4 10th. Following four more pars, she birdied the par-4 15th and remained at 1-under until a bogey on the par-4 third.
Becker took a more adventurous route to her 72. The senior started the on the seventh hole and moved to 1-under with a birdie on No. 9. She added a bogey on the par-3 12th and double bogeyed the par-5 14th to stand at 2-over. Becker parred her next six holes before unleashing a string of birdies on the par-4 third and fourth holes and the par-3 fifth. After dropping to 1-under she bogeyed the par-5 seventh to close her day.
Corinne Viden provided the final round toward the team total with a 76. Viden jumped into the red with a birdie on the par-5 seventh (her second hole of the day). That was the only birdie of Viden for the round as she followed with bogeys on Nos. 11, 13, 15 and 18 — all par 4 — and the par-5 first.
Katie Dunaway and Amelia Hicks shot 78 and Miki Manta had a round of 80 as each member of the team competed at the event. The Rainbow Wahine Invitational marked the final tournament of the fall schedule for Sacramento State. The Hornets will return to competition on Feb. 25-26 at The Gold Rush hosted by Long Beach State.
