BABIC'S 70 LEADS WOMEN'S GOLF IN FIRST ROUND OF GOLFWEEK CONFERENCE CHALLENGE

WOLCOTT, Colo. — The Sacramento State women's golf team was led by a 2-under par round of 70 from Sofie Babic and a 74 from Julia Becker in the first round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Monday. The Hornets shot 302 during the first of three days of play and are tin 10th place at 14-over par in the 18-team field.

UCLA built a sizable advantage during the first round as the Bruins were 11-under as a team. Campbell is nine strokes back in second place while Pepperdine is third at 1-under par. UCLA accounts for two of the four players who are tied for the individual lead at 68 in Mary Weinstein and Clare Leagspi. There are seven players who are two strokes back, including Babic.

Babic tied for fifth place during the round and is just two strokes off the lead. The junior got off to a strong start with birdies on the par-4 11th and par-5 15th. Her first bogey came on the par-3 17th but she returned to 2-under after a birdie on the par-4 first. Following five pars, Babic bogeyed the par-3 seventh but closed out her round with a birdie on the par-3 ninth. Her round of 70 is tied for the third lowest score during her Sacramento State career.

Senior Julia Becker ranked second on the team with a 2-over par round of 74 which ties her for 27th place. Becker traded pars and bogeys over her first four holes before playing her final 14 at even par. She birdied the par-4 14th before a string of five consecutive pars. A bogey on the par-5 second returned her to 2-over until she birdied the par-5 fifth. After two more pars, she bogeyed the par-4 eighth and parred No. 9 to end her day.

Corinne Viden and Nistha Madan each shot 79 and are 7-over. Viden encountered early trouble with a triple bogey on the par-4 11th. She stayed at 3-over through the third hole with a birdie on No. 15 and a bogey on 16. Bogeys on the par-4 fourth and sixth holes surrounded a birdie on the par-5 fifth to move her to 4-over. She ended with par-double bogey-par on her final three holes.

Madan also had to overcome a slow start as she played her first five holes at 5-over. Her first birdie of the round came on the par-5 18th and she stood at 6-over until a birdie on the par-3 seventh. Bogeys on her final two holes left her at 7-over for the day.

Freshman Miki Manta made her debut for the Hornets and carded a round of 82. Manta had birdies on the par-5 18th and second holes as well as six bogeys and three double bogeys.
