SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State women's golf team wrapped up play at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic by finishing in eighth place on Tuesday at the Southern Dunes Golf Club. The Hornets were led by a 2-over par round of 74 by senior Lisa Persson.
Freshman Chloe Bartek had the highest finish for the Hornets, placing ninth with a career 54-hole best total of 77-71-76-224. Person tied for 17th and Rockelle Sande tied for 22nd and also set her career best for 54 holes (78-74-76-228).
New Mexico State finished first in the team standings and was nine strokes ahead of Santa Clara. NMSU was the only team to finish under 300 in all three rounds and totaled 297-296-294-887. Tulsa and Boise State each shot 901 to tie for third while Lamar was fifth at 303.
Sacramento State was second among the eight Big Sky Conference schools in the field. The Hornets shot 305-301-306-912 and finished three strokes back of Montana. The teams will all meet again in the Phoenix area for the Big Sky Championships on April 21-23.
Much like her first round of 72, Persson played Tuesday with only birdies, pars and bogeys. The senior began with a birdie on the par-3 sixth, bogeyed the par-4 eighth and then parred her next six holes. Bogeys on the par-4 15th and par-3 17th moved her to 2-over before she birdied the par-4 first. After three pars, Persson ended the tournament with a bogey on the par-4 fifth.
Bartek and Sande each shot 76 to tie for the second best round by a Hornet during the day. Bartek's round featured some streaky play as she bogeyed her first two holes (Nos. 5 and 6) and then parred her next three. Birdies on the par-4 10th and par-3 11th returned her to even before she had three consecutive bogeys and two pars. From there, she bogeyed the par-3 17th, parred Nos. 18, 1 and 2, birdied the par-5 third and bogeyed the par-3 fourth.
Sande started with five birdies and was still even after her first 10 holes after a bogey on No. 11 and a birdie on No. 13. Back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 16 and 17 came before two pars and a double bogey on the par-4 second. She remained at 4-over with three bogeys.
Tiffany Nichols contributed the final score towards the team total with a round of 80. Nichols' round consisted of two birdies, nine pars, four bogeys and three double bogeys. She finished the tournament tied for 58th place at 78-78-80-236.
Sagree Palavivatana tied for 71st with rounds of 81-78-81-240 . On Tuesday, Palavivatana had a birdie on the par-5 third, nine pars, seven bogeys and a triple bogey.
