MARICOPA, Ariz. — Senior Lisa Persson shot an even-par 72 in the first round and freshman Chloe Bartek added a 1-under par 71 in the second round to lead Sacramento State in the first day of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on Monday.
The Hornets are in sixth place heading into the final round on Tuesday. The team shot 305 in the first round and moved up two spots in the standings with a second round 301. New Mexico State shot 297-296-593 and leads Boise State by five strokes. Lamar (599), Santa Clara (600) and Tulsa (602) complete the top five.
Sacramento State leads the eight Big Sky Conference teams in the field. The Hornets are six strokes ahead of Portland State in the final tune-up before the Big Sky Championships.
Bartek is tied for seventh with rounds of 77-71. The freshman began with six birdies but recorded three bogeys and two double bogeys over her next eight holes to stand at 7-over. A birdie on the par-4 seventh was followed by two pars and a birdie on the par-4 10th. In the second round, she birdie her opening hole (No. 11) before double-bogeying the par-4 12th. Bartek then birdied three of her next four holes to drop to 2-under where she remained until a bogey on the par-4 18th. On the front side of the course, she traded pars and birdies over her first four holes to drop to 3-under with six holes to play. Bogeys on Nos. 5 and 9 and four pars completed her career low round.
Rockelle Sande shot 78-74-152 and is tied for 22nd. Sande birdied a pair of par 5's in the opening round to go along with three bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey. Her second round 74 set a career low for the sophomore. The round was kick-started by an eagle on the 496-yard, par-5 13th. That hole was immediately followed by a double bogey and a birdie on the par-4 15th. She eventually jumped to 3-over after bogeying four of six holes. Sande got back on track with five straight pars and a birdie on the par-4 10th to end her day.
Persson was nearly flawless in her opening round. The senior bogeyed her second hole (No. 9) before three pars. She then birdied the par-5 13th, par-4 15th and par-5 16th to stand at 2-under. Persson ended her day with two bogeys and seven pars over her final nine holes. In the second round, Persson had three bogeys and three double bogeys and is tied for 28th.
Senior Tiffany Nichols is tied for 46th with a pair of 78s. Her first round had three birdies, seven bogeys and a double bogey. Nichols' second round began with a bogey before she recorded nine consecutive pars on holes 10-18. She ended with five bogeys over her final eight holes.
Sagee Palavivatana completed the Sacramento State lineup with rounds of 81 and 78. Palavivatana had two birdies, seven pars and two double bogeys in the first round. She later recorded a birdie, five pars and a double bogey in the second.
Camile Orito of New Mexico State was the only player in the field to record two under-par rounds. Orito shot 71-70-141 and holds a three-stroke lead.
