NICHOLS, WOMEN'S GOLF IN FIRST PLACE AFTER FIRST ROUND OF RAINBOW WAHINE INVITATIONAL

WAHIAWA, Hawaii — Led by Tiffany Nichols and Lisa Persson the Sacramento State women's golf team grabbed the lead after the first round of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Tuesday.

Nichols shot 73 and is tied for first place while Persson recorded a round of 74 and is tied for fourth. Those efforts helped the Hornets shoot 299 which is five strokes ahead of host Hawaii for the top spot in the standings. Colorado State and New Mexico State each shot 305 and are tied for third. The second round of the three-round tournament will take place on Wednesday.

Nichols began her round with a birdie on the par-5 15th hole but was even after a bogey on the par-3 second and eight pars. A bogey on the par-4 seventh took her to 1-over before she returned to even with a birdie on the par-4 ninth. Following another par, she birdied the par-5 11th to drop to 1-under. However a double bogey on the par-3 12th and two pars ended her day at 1-over.

Persson also started her day with a birdie on the par-4 16th. Three pars were trailed by a double bogey on the par-3 second and another par. From that point, she birdied the par-4 fourth and par-4 sixth but also bogeyed the par-3 fifth to leave her even. Persson parred her next five holes but ended by alternating bogeys and pars over her final four holes.

Sagee Palavivatana and Rockelle Sande each shot 76 to contribute toward the team total. Palavivatana had 14 pars and four bogeys during her round and is tied for 12th overall. Sande's round was highlighted by birdies on the par-4 third and 15th holes. She also had 10 pars and six bogeys.

Freshman Chloe Bartek recorded a round of 79 which featured 11 pars and seven bogeys and is tied for 26th. Nicolette Bondura (tied for 42nd) and Lexie Hall (49th) shot 83 and 85, respectively, while competing as individuals.
