BRAKEL'S CAREER LOW KEEPS WOMEN'S GOLF IN CONTENTION AT BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIP
CHANDLER, Ariz. — Kercia Brakel recorded a career low of 71 to lead the Sacramento State women's golf team during the second round of the Big Sky Championship on Monday at Ocotillo Golf Resort.
The Hornets (300-301-601) are in fourth place entering the final round and are nine strokes behind Portland State and Northern Arizona for the team lead. NAU shot 293 during the second round to erase a nine stroke deficit and draw even with the Vikings. Both teams have a two-round total of 592. Northern Colorado moved into third place with a total of 304-295-599.
Brakel's round was her first under par and was flawless through her first 16 holes. The senior began with a birdie on the par-5 first and then parred her next 11 holes. A pair of birdies on the par-4 13th and 15th alternated with two more pars to take her to 3-under. Brakel's lone mistake of the day came on the 17th hole where she double bogeyed the par-4. A par on 18 completed her round and moved her into a tie for sixth place.
Tiffany Nichols ranked second on the team during the round and is tied for 13th overall. Nichols had five pars and four bogeys over her first nine holes and made the turn at 4-over. She built momentum early on the back nine with birdies on the par-4 10th and par-5 11th. Six pars kept her at 2-over before she bogeyed the par-5 18th.
Sagee Palavivatana finished Monday at 76 and is tied for 15th place. Palavivatana did not have a birdie during her round but managed 15 pars and four bogeys. The final score counted toward the team total came from Lisa Persson who shot 79. Persson also did not have a birdie on her card and finished with 11 pars and seven bogeys, including four over the final five holes.
Montana State's Paige Crawford took over the individual lead with a 4-under par 68 during the second round. Crawford has a 36-hole total of 141 and has a one stroke lead over Northern Colorado's Carleigh Silvers.
